London’s ULEZ Expansion Sparks Vandalism and Legal Battles

London is ramping up its Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) with around 2,570 automatic number plate recognition cameras set to go live ahead of the August 29 expansion. Drivers caught in non-compliant vehicles face £12.50 daily fines.

Vandals Strike ULEZ Cameras in Bromley

In a dramatic act of defiance, social media posts reveal sliced wires on ULEZ cameras in Masons Hill. The damage has divided public opinion, with some users hailing the act as heroic.

“Good job,” one social media user cheered.

Another added, “Fantastic, well-done Bromley heroes.”

However, Transport for London (TfL) slammed the vandalism as “unacceptable” and confirmed all incidents will be reported to the police for investigation.

Mayor’s Office Condemns Damage to Critical Transport Infrastructure

Back in March, a spokesperson for the Mayor of London branded opponents’ actions “deeply disappointing.” They called the destruction “petty” and warned it threatens vital transport infrastructure.

So far, over 300 cameras have been installed in areas outside central London as part of the rollout.

Legal Challenge Looms Over ULEZ Extension

The first legal hurdle to Mayor Sadiq Khan’s ULEZ plan was cleared by a coalition of five councils—including Bexley, Bromley, Harrow, Hillingdon, and Surrey County Council—who oppose the expansion.

The challenge, set for a High Court hearing in July, argues TfL failed to follow statutory procedures and neglected proper consultation on the scrappage scheme.

With public resistance mounting and legal threats brewing, the ULEZ rollout faces a stormy road ahead.
