North Wales cops nominated for bravery after armed standoff with gun-wielding man

Unarmed officers face down armed threat

A team of unarmed North Wales Police officers has been nominated for the National Police Bravery Awards 2024. Their heroics came during a tense incident on April 7, 2023, when a distressed woman called to report a violent confrontation with her son, Bobby Lee Hughes, in their Holyhead home. The woman described the scene as a “massive blow-out.”

Sergeant Dylan Thomas and PCs Rachael Roberts, Rob Burgess, Dion Hughes, and Rob Williamson rushed to the address after it was reported Hughes had mentioned possessing a firearm. On arrival, they were met with a volatile situation: Hughes stood at the top of the stairs brandishing a loaded gun and threatening those inside.

Tasers deployed in high-risk showdown

In a daring move, Sergeant Thomas and PCs Roberts and Hughes deployed Tasers simultaneously. The shock partially incapacitated Hughes, causing him to fall and drop the loaded weapon down the stairs. Still dangerous, Hughes fled to his bedroom, where officers repeatedly ordered him to surrender—unaware he no longer had the gun.

Moments later, Hughes emerged and was swiftly arrested. The gun was confirmed cocked and loaded, confirming the severity of the threat.

Officers praised for bravery and quick thinking

Hughes was charged with possession of an air rifle with intent to cause fear of violence and handed a two-year suspended prison sentence on August 3, 2023.

“Quick decision-making was critical,” said Sergeant Thomas. “Had we hesitated, the consequences could have been devastating.”

North Wales Police Federation Chair Vinny Jones hailed the officers’ selfless bravery, applauding their commitment to public safety.

Chief Superintendent Sian Beck praised their professionalism in a volatile domestic incident, while Deputy Chief Constable Nigel Harrison highlighted their courage facing an armed attacker armed only with Tasers.

Police bravery nomination highlights heroism

This nomination for the Police Bravery Awards 2024 stands as a salute to their exceptional courage and dedication to protecting the community amid grave danger.
