Whistleblower Gets Police Protection Over Fire Chief Suicide Note

A whistleblower named in the alleged suicide note of Britain’s first Black fire chief, Wayne Brown, is now under police protection as the inquest into his death kicks off.

Threats After Bombshell Claims

Ben Walker, a fire safety expert who accused Brown of faking his qualifications, revealed he’s been bombarded with threatening messages since Brown’s sudden death in January 2024. Police have issued Walker a formal threat-to-life warning and are providing protection ahead of the Birmingham Coroner’s Court inquest starting Monday.

Wayne Brown: Trailblazer and Mystery

Brown, 50, was appointed chief fire officer of West Midlands Fire Service in April 2023, making history as the first Black leader of a UK fire service. But just one day after an internal probe into alleged fake qualifications—especially a crucial business administration credential for his £170,000 a year job—he was found dead.

Despite a 30-year career marked by bravery at major incidents like the Grenfell Tower fire and terror attacks, Brown’s shocking death leaves a cloud over the fire brigade’s leadership and culture.

Legal Clash and Online Menace

Walker has launched a £7.2 million legal claim against West Midlands Fire Service and West Midlands Police. Since making his allegations public, he’s faced disturbing online threats, including messages demanding “stop hiding” and even his home address.

“The police are not taking any chances,” a source told UK News in Pictures. “Someone has been spoken to about the incident. The threatening messages came from a profile linked to him but were sent from outside the UK, so prosecution is complicated.”

Police tracked a social media profile tied to the suspect but couldn’t confirm UK jurisdiction, making legal action tricky.

Walker was previously charged with harassing Brown, but the case was dropped earlier this year due to lack of evidence. His accusations remain key to the inquest, which will scrutinise how the fire service and police handled the qualifications probe and the fallout from Brown’s death.

Security measures, including a chaperone, are expected to protect Walker during the inquest.
