Neighbour Murderer Carol Campling Jailed for Life

A woman from Chingford has been handed a life sentence after brutally murdering her neighbour. Carol Campling, 39, of Garenne Court, was found guilty of killing 48-year-old Mark Smith, following a trial at the Old Bailey that wrapped up on 7 June.

Life Sentence with Minimum 17 Years

On 21 June, Campling was sentenced to life imprisonment, with a minimum term of 17 years to be served. The chilling case erupted after Campling reported finding Mark’s lifeless body in a neighbour’s flat on Warren Road early in the morning of 15 February 2018.

Brutal Attack Using Bottles, Scissors, Ashtray

Police and paramedics rushed to Garenne Court at 6.45am, discovering Mark Smith suffering horrific injuries. Despite efforts, he was pronounced dead at 7.18am. Detective Inspector John Marriott revealed Campling launched a savage assault using broken bottles, scissors, and an ashtray, leaving Mark to die.

She has always failed to own up to her actions but will now have a long time in prison to think about the consequences of what she did that night,” said DI Marriott.

Drugs and Alcohol Played a Role

The court heard both Campling and Mark were under the influence of heavy drinking and drug use on the fateful night. A post-mortem confirmed death by multiple injuries.

Meanwhile, Robert Edwin Parsons, 64, was acquitted of any involvement in Mark’s murder at the same trial.

Our thoughts remain with the victim’s family during this tragic time.
