Horrific Firework Blast Injures Beloved Horse Dettori on Bonfire Night
A horse named Dettori suffered “excruciating pain” after being hit by part of a firework during a 30-minute display near Countesswells on Bonfire Night. The blast caused “irreversible damage,” pushing his eye deep into the socket, filling it with blood and fluid loss.
Owner Faces Heartbreaking Choice: Surgery or Euthanasia
Dettori’s devastated owner revealed the grim options ahead. “Dettori can be put to sleep, or he can have surgery to remove his eye,” they said. The vet confirmed the damage is “so severe it is irreversible.”
“Your awful actions have meant that a part of the firework you set off has gone directly into Dettori’s eye, pushed his eye so far into the socket that all the fluid has come out and filled with blood… This is the reality me and my mum are faced with after your horrific choice to set fireworks off next to a field full of horses.”
Police Investigate as Fundraiser Raises Nearly £5k
Police Scotland confirmed officers responded to reports of the injured horse in a field on Blacktop Road at 9.45pm on 5 November. “Enquiries are ongoing to establish if any crime has been committed,” a spokesperson said.
Meanwhile, a GoFundMe campaign has raised almost £5,000 for Dettori’s eye surgery. The owner urged stricter firework laws, warning of the dangers fireworks pose to animals.
Owner Pleads for Responsibility and Respect
In a heartfelt message, the owner said:
“Please think about your actions and the consequences they have on others. If it wasn’t for our friends at the yard, we wouldn’t have found Dettori until the morning. We hope this tragedy stops others from recklessly setting off fireworks near animals.”
