Brave PD Benson and Handler Nab Violent Offender Despite Dog Attack
Police Dog Benson and his handler, PC Terry Davidson, have been honoured with a Good Work Minute for their fearless work during a violent domestic incident in Balby.
Chasing a Dangerous Attacker Armed with a Bottle
On Sunday 19 September, the duo rushed to Carr Hill, Balby, to back up officers dealing with a 31-year-old man who turned violent and wreaked havoc on property. The suspect fled before Benson and Davidson arrived, but they quickly tracked him down on Great Central Avenue — where he was spotted wielding a glass bottle.
Dog Attack Doesn’t Stop Police Dog from Getting the Job Done
PC Davidson said: “Once PD Benson located the man, I asked him to drop the bottle or I’d have to release Benson.” The man refused and tried to bolt. Then things turned nasty when the suspect’s friend unleashed a ‘Pit Bull’ type dog, which attacked Benson.
“Benson got cuts on his face and muzzle,” added Davidson. “Despite the pain, he stayed focused.” The dog’s owner soon called the animal back and leashed it, but Benson kept on the suspect’s trail.
Tenacity Pays Off – Suspect Arrested
With Davidson’s help, Benson finally caught the man and made the arrest. Chief Inspector Darren Starkey praised the pair: “Benson showed incredible courage and never lost focus despite his injuries. Their teamwork and bond are outstanding.”
PC Davidson remarked: “We’ve been paired for four months and our bond only grows stronger. I’ve been a cop for eight years, and having Benson by my side in tough calls is a real boost.”
Hats off to PD Benson and PC Terry Davidson for their bravery and dedication to keeping South Yorkshire safe.
