Met Detective Sergeant Darren Barker Dies After Brave Battle
Respected Detective Passes Away
Detective Sergeant Darren Barker, a specialist financial investigator with the Met’s Specialist Operations Command, has died. He was admitted to hospital in late January and passed away on Friday, 12 February, surrounded by his close family.
Nearly Three Decades of Service
DS Barker joined the Met in March 1992 and dedicated nearly 29 years to policing. He spent the bulk of his career as a detective across various specialist units. Recently, he led complex financial crime investigations, including a multi-national money laundering case that saw its first conviction just last month.
Shielding but Still Fighting Crime
Classified as vulnerable during the pandemic, Barker shielded but continued his work from home. His leadership and hard work on high-profile cases never wavered, proving his unwavering commitment to justice.
Tributes Pour In from Colleagues
“Darren was a much loved and respected friend and colleague,” said Detective Chief Superintendent James Harman of Specialist Operations Command. “Known for his humour, positive nature, and incredible dedication, he was an extremely talented detective. His leadership during challenging times was invaluable. He will be deeply missed.”
Family Left to Grieve
DS Barker leaves behind his parents, Eric and Sheila, wife Caroline, two adult children Christian and Lauren, and his brother Eric Barker, a serving Met Police constable in north London.
