Off-Duty PC Foils Armed Driver on A339

Last September, PC Jones was heading home along the A339 near Kingsclere when she stumbled upon a nasty crash — with no emergency services in sight.

Quick-Thinking Heroine Steps In

She pulled over to help. A member of the public warned her a man was trapped inside the wrecked car. When PC Jones checked on him, he suddenly reached for a metal hand tool from his bag.

Without any police kit or protective gear, she sprang into action, wrestling the armed man to the ground and holding him until marked police units arrived to take over and make the arrest.

Justice Served

The man turned out to be disqualified from driving and later fined. PC Jones admitted the encounter caught her off guard.

“It was unexpected to come across that scene because I’d just driven round the corner. When you’re in that kind of situation, you don’t really think, you just do. It’s only afterwards that I thought, ‘Oh, should I have done that on my own?’” she said. “Receiving this is nice, though I didn’t expect it. But it’s good to feel recognised for what you do.”

High Praise from Police Chiefs

Hampshire Police Federation Chair Zoë Wakefield saluted PC Jones’s bravery.

“Despite being off-duty, PC Jones showed real commitment to the public that night by detaining this armed man until colleagues arrived on the scene. I commend her for her courage and quick thinking.”
