Kent Police launch urgent appeal in hunt for clues after soldier Charlie Saywell’s death

Last movements under the spotlight

Kent Police want answers about the final hours of 25-year-old soldier Charlie Saywell. His body was found in the River Medway near Main Gate Road, Chatham, on the morning of Tuesday, March 5, 2024. Officers are desperate to trace where Charlie went on the night before his tragic death.

Social night turns sinister

Charlie was out with friends the evening prior before taking a local taxi back to his Brompton address. But instead of heading inside, he walked into Chatham town centre between 12:10am and 2:40am, passing Primark on High Street and stopping at a fast-food outlet.

It’s believed Charlie may have accidentally climbed into a nearby unknown vehicle, where he was allegedly assaulted by the driver, suffering injuries to his face.

Police plea and family heartache

Detective Sergeant Karen Caulfield said, “We are keen to speak to anyone who saw Charlie walking in Gillingham or Chatham between midnight and 3am, especially near fast-food outlets or cars.”

While foul play is not suspected, police say piecing together Charlie’s movements is vital.

His grieving mother Victoria Brown urged witnesses, “If you saw my son that night, no matter how small the detail, please contact Kent Police so we can get answers.”
