Crash Chaos Blocks Sandown to Newport Road – Woman Seriously Hurt
A nasty smash has brought the main Sandown to Newport Road in Apse Heath to a standstill this evening. Hampshire Police rushed to the scene after a Nissan Micra suffered heavy front-end damage right by the entrance to Sandown Airport.
The crashed car is hogging both lanes, forcing drivers to turn back. A woman inside the Micra was seriously injured and rushed to hospital.
Traffic Chaos: Buses Diverted, Drivers Told to Avoid
Motorists are urged to steer clear of the area and take a detour through Shanklin instead. Southern Vectis announced Route 8 buses to Ryde will now divert via Canteen Road, Shanklin, and Lake.
From Ryde, buses will reroute through Shanklin to Whiteley Bank and then on to Winford. By 8.20pm, the road reopened and buses returned to their usual routes.
Suspect Arrested Over Hit-and-Run
The morning after, police arrested a man suspected of driving offences connected to the crash, which involved two vehicles. The second car, a Nissan Almera, fled the scene after smashing into the Micra.
“The 33-year-old female driver of the Micra was seriously injured and needed hospital treatment,” police confirmed.
The male suspect remains in custody as investigations continue.
