Predator Nabbed Before He Could Target Child in North Yorkshire

Simon Leonard Mewse, 36, from Kirk Ella, Hull, has been locked up for over five years after police stopped him cold before he could carry out a sickening child sex attack in Selby.

Horrific Plans Foiled by Online Crime Unit

North Yorkshire Police’s Online Abuse & Exploitation Team, working with the Yorkshire and Humber Regional Organised Crime Unit, arrested Mewse after he travelled to Skipwith intending to meet an eight-year-old girl for sexual abuse.

Harsh Sentence for Child Sex Offence Attempt

  • Mewse pleaded guilty to arranging or facilitating child sex offences
  • Also charged with attempting to arrange such offences, distributing indecent images of a child, and possessing a Class B drug
  • Sentenced at York Crown Court on 9 September 2020 to 5 years and 3 months in prison
  • Given an extended two-year licence period, placed on the sex offenders’ register for life, and slapped with a lifelong sexual harm prevention order

Detective Praises Police Team for Quick Action

“Thanks to the excellent work conducted by our regional online police colleagues, we were able to arrest Simon Mewse before he had the opportunity to cause serious sexual and psychological harm to a child,” said Detective Sergeant Steve Alderson.

“Mewse is now facing up to the consequences of his intended sexual offending. This joint investigation has taken a predatory individual off the streets and ensured the safety of two vulnerable children through multi-agency safeguarding procedures.”

Police made the arrest on 10 July 2020, charging Mewse the same day. He was remanded in custody due to the high risk he posed before sentencing.
