BBC’s Crimewatch Reopens Eastbourne Murder Case After 19 Years

BBC’s Crimewatch has launched a fresh appeal for information in the chilling unsolved murder of Jennifer Kiely, who was brutally killed in Eastbourne back in 2005. The show, backed by the Sussex and Surrey Major Crime Team, aired on March 24 and revisited Jennifer’s last known movements before her savage death in a seafront shelter.

Jennifer Found Stabbed and Burned in Promenade Shelter

In the early hours of January 22, 2005, a fire was reported in a shelter on Eastbourne’s Holywell lower promenade. Emergency services discovered Jennifer’s body inside, bearing multiple stab wounds. She had been set on fire, with the pushchair she always carried placed ominously on top.

The case stalled after a 2009 review but has remained live since 2011, with Sussex Police continuing forensic investigations and open to new leads.

Key Suspect Still at Large

One critical witness account describes a man seen near the Grand Hotel on the night of the murder. He is Eastern European, slim to medium build, around 5’10″ or 5’11″, with light blond hair and a distinct round face. He wore a zipped-up dark blue jacket, grey jeans, and white trainers. Police have yet to trace or discount him as a suspect.

Family Pleads for Justice and Witnesses to Step Forward

“I think of her every day. But on her anniversary, I can’t stop, I can’t switch off,” said Jennifer’s mother, Margaret, from Ireland. “Somebody, somewhere, knows who is responsible. Just please come forward and let us know.”

Detective Inspector Simon Dunn added, “We continue to explore all lines of enquiry to seek justice for Jennifer and her family. We believe someone out there knows what happened that day.”
