Storm Conall Set to Slam UK with Torrential Rain and Flood Warnings

Britain braces itself as Storm Conall, the third named storm this season, barrels in with heavy rain and flood warnings across southern England. The Met Office has issued yellow alerts following the havoc left by Storm Bert, which drenched the nation just days ago.

Heavy Rain to Soak Flood-Stricken South Tonight

Expect up to two inches of rain tonight, especially in flood-hit hotspots like Sussex, Kent, and the Isle of Wight. The yellow weather warning lasts from 10:00pm November 26 through to 12:00pm November 27.

Meteorologists forecast 15mm to 40mm (0.6 to 1.6 inches) of rain, with some areas possibly seeing a deluge of up to 50mm (2 inches). Expect strong gusts as Storm Conall powers on towards the Netherlands.

Southern England in the Eye of the Storm

  • The warning zone covers the South East coast, stretching from Essex to Kent, spilling west into parts of Dorset and Devon.
  • Flood-prone areas like the Isle of Wight, Sussex, and Kent face the worst downpours and disruption.
  • Transport chaos expected with flooded roads and power outages on the cards.

Communities Still Reeling from Storm Bert

Just last weekend, dreadful Storm Bert left hundreds of homes flooded across Northamptonshire, South Wales, and elsewhere. Nearly 300 flood alerts are still active as clean-up grinds on.

Billing Aquadrome Holiday Park, by the River Nene, remains underwater, with locals fearing repairs won’t be finished before Christmas.

Official Warnings and What to Expect

Mike Silverstone, Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist, warned:

“We’re expecting heavy rain across southern areas tonight, particularly in the South East. The storm’s behaviour could shift, but flooding and travel disruption look likely.”

Temperatures will plunge to around -6°C (21°F) in frost-risk zones. Environment Secretary Steve Reed cautions that while Conall’s blow might not match Bert, flooding risks remain serious.

Met Office Services Director Simon Brown responded to criticism over Storm Bert’s underestimated impact:

“We issued 50 weather warnings last week and continue to learn how to get better prepared for future storms.”

Stay Safe: What You Need to Do

  • Residents in affected areas should stay alert and monitor Met Office updates.
  • Keep an emergency plan ready, especially if living in flood-prone zones.
  • Avoid unnecessary travel as roads may flood or become hazardous.
  • Expect the rain to ease by tomorrow afternoon, but watch out for icy conditions as temperatures drop.

Storm Conall is set to test southern England’s resilience once again. Stay safe and stay dry.
