Brutal Homophobic Murder Rocks London Park
Ranjith Kankanamalage, 50, known as ‘Roy’, was savagely attacked and killed in a London park on Monday, 16 August. The Met’s Specialist Crime Command are treating the murder as a homophobic hate crime and are hunting the killer.
Police Hunt Key Witnesses After Horrific Attack
Detectives have followed several leads thanks to help from the local community. But they believe crucial witnesses are still out there, yet to talk. To crack the case, officers have released images of two men spotted near the cemetery when the murder happened. They could hold vital clues.
- Man One: Medium build, short light hair, dark t-shirt, light blue shorts, dark brown trainers, carrying a black backpack.
- Man Two: Medium build, short dark hair, wearing a dark jacket and dark trousers.
Police Plea: “We Need You to Step Up”
Detective Superintendent Pete Wallis urged: “We understand people might be scared to come forward given the nature of this killing. But no detail is too small. If you know anything, speak up – you can contact us or our LGBT+ partners.”
He specifically appealed to the two men pictured to get in touch. “All info will be treated with sensitivity. We’re determined to catch Ranjith’s killer.”
LGBT+ Community and Mayor Demand Justice
Derek Lee from the Met’s LGBT+ Advisory Group warned: “This unresolved crime is causing huge fear among LGBTQ+ people in Tower Hamlets and London.” He also called for everyone to stay alert when out late and praised police efforts to keep parks safe.
The Mayor of Tower Hamlets, John Biggs, said: “We’re shocked and saddened by this senseless murder. Anyone with info, please come forward so we can protect our community. Tower Hamlets is proudly a No Place for Hate borough.”
