New DVLA Text Scam Promises Fake Road Tax Refunds – Beware!
Drivers are falling prey to a sneaky new scam posing as the DVLA. Frauds send fake texts claiming you’re due a VED road tax refund — but it’s all a ploy to steal your cash.
How the DVLA Text Scam Works
The scam starts with a text message pretending to be from the DVLA. It promises a big refund following supposed changes to road tax laws. Victims are urged to click a link and fill in a form with personal bank details.
Once handed over, the crooks can drain your bank account. It might look harmless, but it’s a trap.
RAC Issues Warning to Drivers
“The cost of motoring is a big worry for drivers, so an unexpected tax rebate can sound very tempting,” said Pete Williams from the RAC. “Always be wary if anyone asks for personal info. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.”
DVLA Denies Sending Refund Texts
The DVLA stresses it never sends emails or texts asking for personal or payment info about vehicle tax refunds. Any such messages should be treated as fraud.
What to Do if You Spot the Scam
- Do NOT click on suspicious links.
- Never share personal or bank details by text.
- Report scam texts or emails to the government’s dedicated fraud team immediately.
Stay sharp and don’t let scammers cash in on your motoring worries!
