Emergency crews swarm Cowes chemical scare on St Mary’s Road
Major response after hazardous chemical alert
Police, ambulance, and fire teams rushed to St Mary’s Road in Cowes tonight following reports of a chemical incident. Fire engines from both Newport and Cowes arrived amid a cordoned-off area.
Hazmat unit joins the fight
A Hazmat officer from Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue was deployed instantly to tackle the potential threat. The emergency services were called just after 7.30pm as paramedics treated several casualties.
Multiple casualties treated
An ambulance spokesperson confirmed crews are assisting with a number of injuries. “We have sent paramedics and additional resources, including an Ambulance Officer,” she said. So far, three people have been treated at the scene.
Police urge locals to steer clear
Hampshire and Isle of Wight Police confirmed part of St Mary’s Road remains closed. A spokesperson said:
“We have closed part of St Mary’s Road in Cowes to allow the Fire and Rescue Service to manage a hazardous chemical incident. Police were alerted just after 7pm by Isle of Wight Ambulance Service, where paramedics were already treating a man in his 20s.
Officers remain on site and are in contact with local residents. Please avoid the area until further notice.”
