New National Resilience Centre Unveiled at Aintree

Fire and rescue teams from across Britain gathered at Liverpool’s Aintree to witness the launch of the brand-new £40 million National Resilience Centre of Excellence. This cutting-edge facility is set to become the go-to training hub for emergency services, sharpening their skills to tackle national crises like never before.

Training for National Emergencies – From Pandemics to Wildfires

The centre is designed to train personnel on the latest equipment used during major incidents. From fighting wildfires and floods to stepping up in the COVID-19 pandemic, this HQ has already been crucial in supporting relief efforts in the UK and abroad — including aid missions to Ukraine. The UK International Search and Rescue, based in Merseyside, also benefits greatly from this new facility.

Top Brass Praise State-of-the-Art Facility

Chief Fire Officer Phil Garrigan of the Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service, who led the project with Home Office backing, opened the centre with fiery passion. He said, “From national disasters to terrorist attacks, our emergency services will play a key role in keeping us safe and secure. This centre will help them to enhance their capabilities further.”

Deputy Chief Fire Officer Nick Searle revealed these resources were deployed over 1,300 times in the past year alone, demonstrating the critical demand for this kind of readiness. Meanwhile, National Fire Chiefs Council Chair Mark Hardingham hailed the centre as a “unique facility with unique resources” supported by every UK fire and rescue service.

Cutting-Edge Training Zones and Realistic Simulations

  • A realistic earthquake disaster zone for search and rescue drills
  • An industrial-style building for fiery LPG simulations
  • A towering high-rise to perfect rescue-at-height techniques
  • Facilities for testing high-volume pumps and simulating floodwater rescues

This all means emergency services can train harder and smarter, across diverse scenarios.

Government & Ministers Backing National Safety

Dame Diana Johnson, Home Office Minister of State, made her first official visit to a fire and rescue service at Aintree. She praised the programme’s delivery and stressed Labour’s commitment to resilience and national standards.

“We want a renewed focus on resilience and national standards which lie at the heart of what we do and of what you do,” she said.

UK Ready for Whatever Comes Next

The National Resilience Centre of Excellence is a major leap forward in Britain’s emergency response, ensuring fire and rescue services are battle-ready for disasters and attacks. It’s a vital investment making the UK safer and stronger for the future.
