Blast Tears Through Upper Basildon House
A man narrowly escaped death after a massive gas explosion wrecked his £750,000 detached house in Upper Basildon, near Reading.
The blast tore through the ground and first floors just after 10.30pm on Saturday, blowing out windows and scattering debris across the street.
Severely Burned Victim Escapes Wreckage
Despite horrendous injuries to his hands, face, and body, the unidentified man managed to flee the burning ruins.
A neighbour said: “There was this huge woosh and rumble, then rubble flying everywhere. I saw the man running out, his clothes ripped and stuck to his blistered skin.”
Emergency Services Rush to Scene
- Five fire engines and thirty firefighters from the Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service fought the blaze with an aerial ladder.
- South Central Ambulance Service sent an ambulance and a Hart unit to treat the badly burned victim on site.
- Thames Valley Police secured the area with a cordon while crews worked to make the site safe.
House Left in Ruins – But No Collapse Risk
The explosion blew out an entire side of the property and shredded most of the roof. Debris littered the road, but thankfully, there’s no immediate danger of the structure collapsing.
Neighbours remain shaken by the close call. One revealed he narrowly avoided walking past the house that night, choosing a different route home.
