Drone Smuggling Mission Foiled by Fox Near Wandsworth Prison
Police near HMP Wandsworth in South London found themselves in a bizarre chase after spotting a drone smuggling drugs and mobile phones into the prison.
Drone Gets Caught in Tree – Then Snatched by a Street-Smart Fox
Eyewitnesses say the drone tried to dodge capture but ended up tangled in a tree. Firefighters struggled to retrieve it, only for an opportunistic urban fox to snatch the drone before officers could seize it.
The chase took a strange turn when the fox reportedly ingested some of the drone’s illicit cargo and began showing worrying symptoms, alerting police to the animal’s distress.
Criminal Gangs Use Drones to Outsmart Prison Security
This odd incident highlights how criminal gangs are increasingly using drones to sneak contraband into prisons. Despite new no-fly zones within 400 metres of all UK prisons—introduced by the Ministry of Justice last month—smugglers continue to test security limits.
Previously, authorities could only act on concrete evidence of smuggling. Now, drone operators risk fines up to £2,500, while smugglers face up to ten years behind bars.
Soaring Drone Smuggling Threat Fuels Prison Violence
The use of drones to deliver spice, mobile phones, and other banned items has more than doubled from 2019 to 2021. These substances often worsen violence among inmates and help gangs coordinate illicit activities inside.
Neither Wandsworth Prison nor the Ministry of Justice commented on the fox escapade, but Prisons Minister Edward Argar reaffirmed the government’s drive to stop contraband reaching prisoners.
