Axe and Hammer Rampage on German High-Speed Train Injures Four
At least four people were injured after a man armed with an axe and hammer launched a brutal attack on a crowded high-speed train in southern Germany. The terrifying incident happened just after 2pm local time aboard an Intercity Express (ICE) heading towards Vienna near Straßkirchen in Lower Bavaria.
Passenger Hero Tackles Axe-Wielding Attacker
German police identified the assailant as a 21-year-old Syrian national. Armed with multiple weapons, including an axe and hammer, he struck passengers randomly before being confronted.
In a dramatic twist, a courageous passenger wrestled a weapon from the attacker and helped bring the violent rampage to an end, according to German newspaper BILD. Fellow travellers pulled the emergency brake, forcing the ICE train to a sudden halt and triggering the closure of the rail line between Straubing and Plattling.
Suspect in Police Custody – Motive Unknown
The attacker was swiftly arrested at the scene and remains in police custody. Authorities have not yet disclosed a motive, leaving open the possibility of ideological or psychological causes.
Multiple emergency units, including firefighters and medical teams, rushed to the scene to assist the wounded, with at least four people hurt in the assault.
Spike in Violence Shakes German Transport
- Just one day earlier, a man with a knife attacked employees at a utility company in Mellrichstadt, killing one and injuring three.
- In May 2025, a woman armed with a knife stabbed 18 people in a frenzied attack at Hamburg Central Station, one of Germany’s busiest transport hubs.
These shocking incidents have stirred fresh fears over security on public transport, especially long-distance trains, across Germany.
Calls for Tougher Security and Mental Health Checks
There are increasing calls for stronger screening processes, more frequent onboard patrols, and enhanced mental health support to prevent future attacks.
German officials say a full investigation is underway. The suspect is expected to face charges including attempted murder and grievous bodily harm as authorities seek to bring justice and restore safety to German rail networks.
