Chaos in Harehills: Bus Torched, Police Car Overturned After Child Protection Clash

West Yorkshire erupted into violence on Thursday night after social workers faced fierce hostility during a child protection case in Harehills. Police had to step in amid brutal disorder that saw a double-decker bus set ablaze and a police vehicle flipped over. Multiple arrests followed the shocking rampage.

Five Arrests and Ongoing Probe

  • Five suspects in custody: West Yorkshire Police quickly arrested five individuals linked to the violent unrest. Officers are hunting for more suspects to bring to justice.
  • Social workers targeted: The trouble began when social workers encountered aggression while handling a sensitive case. Police arriving to assist were themselves attacked with bricks and missiles.
  • Police pull back initially: Assistant Chief Constable Pat Twiggs revealed that officers temporarily withdrew due to the intensity of the violence but returned with reinforcements to contain the chaos.
  • Political outrage: Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer slammed the disturbances as “shocking and disgraceful,” demanding that those responsible be held to account.
  • Local leaders intervene: Leeds City Council called for an “urgent review” of the child protection matter and appealed for calm in the community.

On the Ground: Eyewitnesses Speak Out

Green Councillor Mothin Ali was among those at the scene, stepping in to calm tensions. Video footage shows him stopping youths from dragging a wheelie bin towards the growing flames and preventing an adult from throwing a pallet on the fire.

“This is my community, these are my people, regardless of how they behaved,” said Councillor Ali. “This behaviour is unacceptable but we need people to step in and calm things down when they can. I have a position of authority and I have to use it.”

Police Federation Sounds Alarm

West Yorkshire Police Federation chairman Craig Nicholls condemned the violence as “utterly unacceptable.” He praised the bravery of officers forced to deal with a routine job turned hostile riot.

“What should have been a standard duty quickly turned into a night of chaos, highlighting the need for robust support and resources for those maintaining public safety,” Nicholls said.

Community United, Authorities on High Alert

Leeds City Council, alongside Roma community representatives, promised a thorough review of the child protection case that triggered the unrest. The council’s statement stressed the vital need for calm and warned of the long-lasting damage to community trust.

“We are asking all communities to remain calm and to ensure that we do not see further disturbances such as those witnessed last night, which brought fear and upset to communities in Harehills. Local people are devastated by what happened, and we want to ensure there is no repeat of the distressing scenes we saw,” the council declared.

Police Call For Witnesses As Tensions Remain High

Police urge anyone with information about the rioters to come forward. An increased police presence will patrol Harehills in the coming days to restore order and protect residents from further violence.
