Sussex Police have stepped up after dangerous explosives were found at a property on the A259 Marina on Wednesday, March 20. Specialist bomb disposal teams swiftly made several hazardous items safe, but the drama isn’t over yet.
Residents Locked Out as Massive Cordon Remains
About 45 homes remain sealed off under a police cordon stretching from Caves Road to Sussex Road, including parts of West Hill Road. Residents are still unable to return to their properties while experts assess the danger.
Huge Emergency Response in Full Swing
The discovery triggered a major response involving Sussex Police, East Sussex Fire and Rescue, and the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) experts, all coordinated by the Sussex Resilience Forum. Authorities stress the incident is not linked to terrorism or large-scale drug production.
Still, the chemicals were deemed a severe risk to life and required expert handling.
Man Arrested Over Explosives & Illegal Substances
A 28-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of producing illegal substances and creating explosives for unlawful uses. He is currently held in police custody.
Displaced Locals Sheltered at Emergency Rest Centre
Hastings Borough Council has set up a temporary rest centre for affected residents at the Royal Victoria Hotel, ensuring displaced families have a safe place to stay.
Chief Inspector James Scott said, “Our priority is to keep people safe. We appreciate the support and patience of residents and the wider community as we work to bring this incident to a safe conclusion while minimising further disruption.”
