IOPC Steps In
IOPC Director Amanda Rowe said: “Our thoughts are with Mr Estridge’s family and loved ones, as well as all those affected by his death. We have been in contact with the family and will keep them updated as our investigation progresses.”
“It is vital there is a thorough, independent investigation to understand the events and police actions surrounding the death. Our findings will be shared with the family, Merseyside Police, and the Coroner in time.”
“While we are early in the probe, we have collected and started reviewing all footage related to the incident to uncover exactly what happened. We request the public respect the family’s privacy and avoid speculation at this difficult time.”
What Happened on Back Faulkner Street South?
- IOPC investigators visited the scene and police station on Friday to gather evidence.
- Police officers were stationed at both ends of Back Faulkner Street South when they approached two men.
- Officers spoke to one man while others followed Mr Estridge, who was riding an e-bike away from them.
- At about 3.10pm, three officers on foot and a police van were at the junction of Back Faulkner Street South and Grove Street.
- The police van moved forward, partially blocking the junction as officers approached Mr Estridge.
- Mr Estridge fell off his e-bike and collided with the stationary van.
- Police restrained him on the ground, soon recognising he needed medical help and administered first aid.
- Paramedics arrived and removed a package found in Mr Estridge’s mouth.
Ongoing Investigation
A post-mortem took place on Saturday but the cause of death remains undetermined pending further tests.
The investigation will examine police decisions, restraint methods, and medical care provided during the incident.
