Hammersmith Police Station Reopens After £millions Refit
Hammersmith Police Station on Shepherd’s Bush Road has been transformed. After four years of intense refurbishment, the historic Grade II building is now a cutting-edge policing hub. Over 1,000 officers and staff are moving into their sleek new base, ready to crack down across west Central West BCU.
State-of-the-Art Meets Heritage
The revamped station is no ordinary refurb. It boasts 38 custody cells and 18 upgraded, spacious stables to keep the mounted branch galloping strong. Teams including Neighbourhood Policing, Roads and Transport Policing, Emergency Response, and CID will all work under one roof.
The iconic building’s original character has been lovingly preserved — vaulted ceilings uncovered from the 1980s, polished period staircases and restored police lanterns all bring history back to life.
Even a historic arch linking two buildings was painstakingly dismantled brick by brick, cleaned, and rebuilt using traditional mortar techniques.
New Front Counter Opens September 29
A 24-hour front counter opens on Tuesday, 29 September, replacing the temporary facility at Shepherd’s Bush. The public reception boasts a larger waiting area and two fresh triage counters for swift service.
Chief Superintendent Helen Harper, BCU commander, said:
“We are delighted that Hammersmith is now ready for use and our staff have already started moving in. The refurbishment has turned an old, tired building into a modern, fit-for-purpose hub. Officers and staff can now work together more efficiently and provide the best service for our communities. Located in the heart of Hammersmith, this building puts us at the centre of everything.”
Modern Policing, Better Service
The station uses the latest IT and digital tech to boost efficiency while respecting its historic charm. This upgrade is part of a broader Met initiative to support the growing number of officers with smart, modern workspaces.
Remember, although the front desk is reopening, the public is still encouraged to use online or phone services where possible, while following government guidelines.
