Watch Out! ‘Mum and Dad’ WhatsApp Scam on the Rise in West Yorkshire

West Yorkshire Police have issued a stark warning about a nasty spike in the ‘mum and dad fraud’. Scammers pose as sons or daughters, sending WhatsApp or text messages to trick parents into handing over cash.

How the Scam Works

The crooks claim they’ve changed their phone number due to an emergency — like a lost or broken phone — and urgently need money. They plead for amounts up to £3,000, promising to repay it soon.

In reality, the cash lands in the pockets of criminals. Once sent, recovering the money is a daunting task.

Police Issue Crucial Advice

Det Insp James Humphreys of West Yorkshire’s Economic Crime Unit said: “This is a particularly cruel deception which makes concerned parents believe their son or daughter is in financial difficulties and needs their help.”

“We’re working hard across the country to get this message out. Please share details of this fraud with your family to stop anyone falling victim.”

He urged anyone receiving suspicious messages to double-check with their loved ones using a trusted contact method — like their usual phone number. Don’t trust the message alone. Always speak to them directly before sending any money.
