Fuel Thief Strikes Twice at Wimblington Service Stations
Two independent petrol stations in Wimblington, Cambridgeshire, have fallen victim to a brazen fuel thief. The culprit hit both Sisco Service Station on Doddington Road, Peterborough, and Robinhood Service Station on Wimblington Road, March — filling up and driving off without paying.
Suspect’s Car Tagged but No MOT
The offences happened just days apart last week. Both service stations shared the suspect’s details on social media, urging locals to stay alert. The vehicle is taxed but notably has no current MOT, making it easier to identify.
Petrol Theft: A Crime Carrying Serious Jail Time
Known legally as a “drive-off,” petrol theft is a criminal offence under Section 7 of the Theft Act 1968. Offenders can face up to seven years in prison. However, first-time offenders often receive fines or community orders instead.
Local Businesses Hit Hard Amid Rising Costs
The British Retail Consortium warns that fuel theft costs UK retailers millions annually, hitting smaller community service stations like Sisco and Robinhood hardest. With fuel prices climbing, according to the Office for National Statistics, petty thefts are on the rise — but police stress economic hardship is no excuse for crime.
Community Services Under Threat
Sisco and Robinhood are key providers for the Wimblington area, supplying essential fuel and goods. The recent thefts have dealt a financial and emotional blow, raising fears that such crimes could push up prices for honest customers.
“Repeated incidents of this nature take a heavy toll on local businesses. Ultimately, it’s honest customers who will feel the pinch,” said representatives from both stations.
Residents have been urged to report any information to help catch the culprit before more damage is done to these vital community hubs.
