Man left fighting for life after brutal assault in Portsmouth

A man is critically ill after a savage attack outside a pub in Portsmouth on Easter Sunday. The shocking assault took place just after 5.30pm at the busy junction of New Road and Lynn Road in Fratton.

Incident outside The Stagg pub

The victim, a 29-year-old local man, was talking to another man riding a push bike outside The Stagg when the attack unfolded. After a brief conversation, the cyclist suddenly assaulted the victim before cycling off the scene.

Serious head injuries and police hunt

The victim was rushed to Southampton General Hospital with serious head injuries. Police have sprung into action, arresting a 25-year-old Portsmouth man on suspicion of grievous bodily harm with intent. He remains in custody.

Call for witnesses to come forward

“There were lots of people in the area at the time of the incident so it is highly likely someone saw what happened,” said Detective Inspector David West. “We urge anyone with information to get in touch with us as soon as possible.”
