Shocking Attack in Southampton: Pensioner Robbed and Injured in Park
Police are hunting a thief who snatched a handbag off an 82-year-old pensioner, knocking her to the ground in a brutal daylight robbery in Southampton’s Watts Park.
Handbag Snatched in Broad Daylight
The victim had just enjoyed a coffee with a friend before entering Watts Park near Above Bar and Commercial Road on Monday, 1 January, just before 11:30am. Without warning, a young man around 5’7” lunged at her, yanking the handbag from her shoulder and sending her crashing to the floor.
Thug Flees, Victim Hospitalised
The culprit sprinted off with the stolen goods, leaving the pensioner with a fractured shoulder and severe bruises. She was treated in hospital for her injuries.
Hero Bystander Chased Attacker
As the attacker fled, another man stepped up, chasing after him in an attempt to help the injured woman.
Detective Constable Martin Brewer said: “This was a cowardly crime against a vulnerable member of the community who was simply walking through the park with a friend. We’re eager to speak to the man who chased after the suspect, and anyone who witnessed the attack or saw a man running through Watts Park or nearby streets on New Year’s Day.”
