Armed Police Ram 13-Year-Old Off Bike Over Toy Water Pistol Mistake

Armed officers who knocked a 13-year-old boy off his bike and handcuffed him after confusing his water pistol for a real gun have been cleared of any wrongdoing.

Water Fight Sparks Armed Response

The bizarre incident happened on July 19 in Hackney, east London. Police were called after a patrol officer spotted what they thought was a firearm during a water fight between the boy and his younger brother. Both were playing with colourful water pistols — one blue and white, the other pink and white — which were mistaken for genuine weapons.

Armed officers swooped in, ramming the boy off his bike with a police van before handcuffing him as a safety precaution.

Investigation Finds Police Actions ‘Reasonable’

An internal Metropolitan Police investigation, along with an Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) review, backed the officers’ actions as “reasonable in the circumstances.”

Charmaine Arbouin, IOPC Regional Director, said: “Being arrested, handcuffed, and searched by armed officers would have been a frightening experience for anyone, let alone a 13-year-old. We note the Met Police has apologised to the boy’s family for the distress caused. However, police officers have a duty to protect the public from harm. The evidence supported the initial officer’s belief that they saw a potential real firearm. Sending armed officers was in line with police guidelines. Our investigation found no grounds for disciplinary action.”

Family and Public Left Shaken

The boy’s family has yet to publicly respond to the IOPC’s decision. The Met made an earlier apology for the incident’s distressing impact.

This case highlights the tough line police walk when assessing threats while avoiding trauma — especially involving children. Critics have called for improved training and protocols to clearly distinguish toy weapons from real guns to prevent repeat incidents.

So far, the Met Police haven’t announced any policy changes but stress their ongoing commitment to public safety and community trust.
