Nicola Bulley’s Past Alcohol Struggles Revealed By Police
Police Disclose Nicola’s ‘Specific Vulnerabilities’
Nicola Bulley, the missing mum-of-two, had a history of alcohol-related issues, Lancashire Police confirmed. The force spoke out after earlier mentioning her “specific vulnerabilities” in relation to her disappearance.
Recent months saw Nicola’s alcohol problems resurface, they revealed. The 45-year-old’s ongoing menopause struggles contributed to her difficulties, which caused great strain for partner Paul Ansell and their family.
“Sadly, it is clear from speaking with Paul and the family that Nicola had in the past suffered with some significant issues with alcohol that were brought on by her ongoing struggles with menopause, and that these struggles had resurfaced over recent months,” the police said.
Police and Health Worker Visit Before Disappearance
On January 10th, police teamed up with health professionals to respond to a welfare concern at Nicola’s home. No arrests were made, but the case remains under investigation.
Det. Supt Rebecca Smith said revealing these details was unusual but necessary to avoid speculation. The family has been informed and asked for privacy during this heartbreaking period.
No Third-Party Involvement—Police Push Back on Social Media Sleuths
Officers maintain there is no evidence of third-party involvement in Nicola’s disappearance. After her partner reported her missing, a specialist police search labelled her as “high-risk.”
However, the investigation has been hampered by distractions from amateur detectives and social media video makers. Det. Supt Smith branded their interference “significant” and “shocking.” She added:
“Some of it’s been quite shocking and really hurtful to the family… but as long as we prioritise genuine information, it won’t derail our key actions.”
The Timeline of Nicola’s Disappearance
- January 27: Nicola dropped her daughters, aged six and nine, at school in St Michael’s on Wyre, Lancashire.
- She was last seen walking alongside the River Wyre with her springer spaniel Willow at 9.10 a.m.
- About 20 minutes later, her phone—still connected to a work call—was found abandoned on a bench overlooking the riverbank, with Willow running free.
Police have faced criticism for quickly ruling out foul play, despite the mysterious circumstances.
