Bomb squad rush to Shorwell after bomb found on Isle of Wight
Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) teams have been dispatched to Shorwell on the Isle of Wight following the discovery of a large unexploded bomb. Police called in bomb disposal experts to assess the threat after the device was found.
Roads closed as bomb experts on their way
The main road through Shorwell Village was shut in both directions while police awaited the arrival of the EOD team. Locals in the area were told to stay inside with windows open but curtains firmly closed as a precaution.
It remains unclear if any nearby homes were evacuated during the operation.
Bomb safely detonated by Royal Navy
Police have now lifted the road closure after confirming the device posed no immediate danger to the public road. Officers remained at the scene throughout the operation.
At 6.10pm, the bomb squad successfully detonated the device. The Royal Navy team safely removed a two-inch trench mortar bomb from Shorwell Shute, bringing the tense incident to a close.
