Tragic Brixton Crush: Security Guard Gabrielle Hutchinson Dies After O2 Incident

Second Fatality After Brixton Academy Chaos

Gabrielle Hutchinson, 23, has died in hospital in the early hours of Monday, 19 December. She was working as a contracted security guard at the Brixton O2 Academy when the tragic crush unfolded on Thursday night. Chief Superintendent Colin Wingrove, head of Lambeth and Southwark policing, expressed his sorrow: “It is devastating news that a second person has lost their life following the events on Thursday. I wish to express my heartfelt condolences to Gabrielle’s family at this unimaginably difficult time.”

Police Probe Intensifies Amid Complex Investigation

Detectives from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command are working tirelessly to piece together what happened during the deadly crush. The investigation is vast and complex. Officers are analysing CCTV, phone footage, interviewing witnesses, and conducting forensic examinations to get to the truth.

Police have removed cordons outside the venue but still maintain them inside as they continue to examine the scene. Three people were critically injured during the crush, all located in the foyer. Tragically, both Gabrielle Hutchinson and fellow victim Rebecca Ikumelo have since died. A third woman, aged 21, remains in critical condition in hospital.

Witnesses Urged to Come Forward

With around 4,000 people present that night, police have launched an online portal for anyone with photos, videos, or information to assist the investigation. Authorities are urging all potential witnesses to speak up and help piece together the events leading to this heartbreaking tragedy.

Official Actions and Next Steps

  • Police were first called at 9.04pm Thursday over large crowds outside the venue.
  • A second call at 9.35pm reported people trying to force entry into the building.
  • The Independent Office for Police Conduct has been notified, following standard procedure after any incident involving police attendance and death or serious injury.

Our thoughts remain with the families affected by this devastating event.
