Tragic School Bus Crash in Somerset: Child Dead, 21 Injured After Coach Overturns

A heartbreaking school bus tragedy in Somerset has claimed the life of a child and left 21 others injured, two with life-threatening injuries. The coach, carrying schoolchildren from a zoo day trip, overturned and slid down a steep embankment just before 3pm on Thursday, July 17.

Horror Crash on A396 Cutcombe Hill

The crash happened on the A396 Cutcombe Hill, between Wheddon Cross and Timbercombe, as the coach was returning with 60 to 70 passengers onboard. Most were children aged 9 to 10, alongside school staff. Emergency teams from Somerset Fire and Rescue Service rushed to the scene.

“Our crews carried out multiple rescues in extremely difficult conditions,” said a fire service spokesperson.

Casualties and Emergency Response

  • 1 child confirmed dead
  • 2 critically injured, airlifted to hospital
  • 21 injured in total, many hospitalised by helicopter
  • Most passengers taken to a rest centre in Wheddon Cross
  • An off-duty firefighter helped with initial rescues

The coach was carrying pupils from Minehead Middle School. Police confirmed their swift response and that investigations are now underway.

School and Community Left in Shock

Minehead Middle School was placed on lockdown as worried parents rushed towards the crash site. Locals guided families to a makeshift care centre at the Rest and Be Thankful Inn. School staff and specialist officers are offering support to the children and families affected.

Official Investigation Underway

Superintendent Mark Edgington told reporters:

“One child has sadly died… Two others remain seriously injured. A full investigation is underway.”

He urged the public to avoid speculation, warning that rumours would only cause more pain. The A396 remains closed both ways as accident investigators comb the scene.

Coach Operator Speaks Out

Peter Prior-Sankey, director of Ridlers Coaches, said:

“We are deeply concerned and are working closely with the school and emergency services. Our hearts go out to the children, their families, and our driver.”

National Leaders React

Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed his condolences:

“There are no adequate words to acknowledge the death of a child. My thoughts are with their parents, family, friends, and all affected.”
