Crackdown on Fly-Tipping: Eight Vehicles Seized in Gravesend and Dartford
In a bold move to tackle fly-tipping, four agencies teamed up on Tuesday 3 August 2021 for a major day of action across Gravesend and Dartford. Their joint patrols and stop checks targeted those behind illegal waste dumping, resulting in the seizure of eight vehicles suspected of being involved.
Heavy Hitters Take on Illegal Dumpers
Inspector Sarah Rivett of Kent Police slammed fly-tipping as “an unacceptable nuisance and a danger to public safety.” She said,
“Although local councils are the lead agencies for such offending, we simply will not turn a blind eye to the detrimental impact it has on our communities. This day of action was the culmination of close partnership working to disrupt fly-tipping offenders. Members of the public can expect to see similar operations in the future.”
In Gravesend alone, Kent Police’s Rural Task Force seized seven untaxed vehicles all linked to one individual in the Springhead Road area. Three of these were found loaded with large quantities of builders’ waste, raising strong suspicions of fly-tipping.
Dartford Steps Up Enforcement
On the other side of the border, enforcement continued in Dartford. The Community Policing Team set up a vehicle checkpoint on Manor Way, stopping 16 vehicles.
- A Renault Master van was seized after the driver was found to be licence-free and was issued with a traffic offence report.
- A driver of a Mercedes Sprinter received a fixed penalty notice for transporting commercial waste without a licence.
- Later, four more vehicles were stopped on 1 Road, with two Mercedes Sprinters getting Environment Agency warnings for failing to produce waste carrier licences.
Zero Tolerance from Gravesham Council
Cllr John Burden, Leader of Gravesham Borough Council, emphasised the council’s hard line on environmental crime:
“Environmental crime is high on residents’ concerns. We have a zero-tolerance approach and work closely with Kent Police and the Environment Agency to root out offenders. Whether through proactive raids or investigating fly-tips for evidence, we will find and take action against those ruining our environment.”
This joint operation sends a clear warning: the crackdown on fly-tippers is serious and ongoing. Those dumping waste illegally are on notice — authorities are watching and ready to act.
