Knife Crime in Swindon: Possession Soars Despite Fewer Stabbings
Knife crime in Swindon is stirring serious alarm. While knife attacks dropped 6% from June 2021 to June 2022, the number of incidents involving someone carrying a knife jumped a massive 48%. The town centre is feeling the heat.
Teen Stabbed Near Link Centre
On Saturday 28 October, a 14-year-old boy was stabbed near Swindon’s Link Centre. He remains in a serious condition in hospital. Police swiftly arrested three teenagers linked to the attack.
Police Ramp Up Efforts to Curb Knife Crime
Swindon commander Superintendent Phil Staynings said: “We are acutely aware of the impact these crimes have on our communities and the ages of those involved are shocking.”
He added: “We are pulling out all the stops. Our community officers, proactive teams and firearms unit are all working flat out. We’re also partnering with Swindon Borough Council to step up early intervention and keep young people away from crime.”
Police have flexed strong legal powers, using closure orders, injunctions, and criminal behaviour orders to tackle offenders — all proving effective at lowering local risks. But Staynings admits more needs to be done.
Section 60 Orders Could Be Next Step
One tool on the table is a Section 60 order, allowing police to stop and search anyone in designated areas for up to 24 hours without reasonable suspicion. This can be extended for another day if needed.
Supt Staynings stressed: “My officers will use every tactic available to reduce stabbings, but we cannot do it alone. We rely on communities to come forward with information — intelligence is key to tackling this problem.”
He urged anyone with details to call 999 or anonymously report via 0800 555 111.
