Challenger 3 Tanks Get High-Tech Turret in £25m Upgrade
Newcastle’s Pearson Engineering has kicked off work on a cutting-edge turret for the Challenger 3 tanks, as part of a £25 million sub-contract. This upgrade promises top-notch firepower, better survivability, and next-level surveillance and targeting technology.

“Challenger 3 tanks will be at the forefront of the British Army’s ground force deterrent against our adversaries. They will be equipped with the latest digital enhancements and weaponry, providing support and reassurance to our allies,” said Defence Procurement Minister Jeremy Quin during the steel-cutting ceremony at Pearson Engineering.
“This steel cut represents progress on delivering our ongoing upgrades and investing in skills and manufacturing in the North East and across the UK.”

This prime contract secures 285 skilled jobs at Pearson Engineering and kicks off recruitment for project managers, engineers, designers, plus 20 apprentices. The firm’s expanded STEM outreach will nurture future talent, underpinning UK defence manufacturing.
