Cumbria Police Officer Dies in Line of Duty

Police Constable Nick Dumphreys, 47, has tragically died following a collision on the M6 southbound yesterday (26 January). PC Dumphreys joined Cumbria Constabulary in 2003 and spent most of his career with the Mobile Support Group. His sudden death has shocked colleagues and the community alike.

Family and Colleagues Pay Tribute

PC Dumphreys’ family described him as a “kind and loving husband and father” and “a larger than life character who loved his job and adored his family.” They said his passing “will leave an enormous hole in all our hearts” and asked for privacy to grieve.

Cumbria Constabulary’s Chief Constable Michelle Skeer added: “Nick was an extremely popular and respected officer known for his professionalism, integrity, and dedication. He was a consummate professional who you could always rely on. A big character with an even bigger heart, Nick always put others first.”

Community and Police Send Condolences

Police and Crime Commissioner Peter McCall expressed his sorrow, saying: “Nick was a most professional and dedicated officer, totally committed to protecting and serving the public. My thoughts and prayers are with his wife, children, friends and colleagues.”

“He died doing the job he excelled at and will be deeply missed.”

Witness Appeal as Investigation Continues

Officers are urgently appealing for anyone who witnessed the crash, or who has dashcam footage of the incident or involved vehicles, to come forward. A thorough investigation is underway with support from a neighbouring force.
