Fatal Blaze on A406: One Dead, One Critical After Suspicious Fire

Police were scrambled just before midnight on Tuesday, 18 June, following reports of a fire next to the southbound A406. Firefighters and paramedics rushed to the scene alongside officers.

Two Men Suffer Burns, One Dies

Two men, both believed to be in their 40s, were found with serious burns and rushed to hospital. Tragically, one man died the next day, Wednesday 19 June. The other remains in critical condition.

A post-mortem is scheduled for Saturday, 22 June. So far, the victims have not been publicly identified.

Arrests Made as Police Probe Suspicious Blaze

Detectives from the Homicide and Major Crime Command have launched a full investigation. They are treating the fire as suspicious and enquiries are ongoing to uncover how it started.

“We are working hard to establish the circumstances that led to this fatal fire and we believe the public can assist us with our investigation,” said Detective Sergeant Ian Valentine.

“After the fire started, two men appeared on the A406, seeking help from passing drivers. If anyone saw these men or stopped to speak with them, please get in touch.”

“We are especially keen to hear from anyone with dashcam footage.”

Two men have been arrested on suspicion of arson and attempted murder. They remain in custody at an East London police station.
