First Ever Volunteer Tasers Hit South Wales Streets

In a historic move, South Wales Police will deploy Tasers with volunteer officers for the first time ever. Two Special Constables and a Special Inspector are set to carry the devices following fresh national legislation.

Volunteer Officers Finally Armed Like Regulars

Special Constables have long fought crime alongside full-time cops, sharing the same powers and dangers. Yet until last year, they weren’t allowed to carry Tasers. That’s all changed now.

Jason Francis and Ben Johns are among the latest Special Constables to complete a rigorous three-day Taser training course. They’re now officially authorised to carry the stun guns, boosting their ability to protect the public, themselves, and fellow officers.

Joining them is Special Inspector Jonathan Edwards, a Special Forces veteran with 26 years under his belt. Although trained to use Tasers for five years to instruct new recruits, SI Edwards wasn’t allowed to carry one until this law change.

Special Inspector Edwards Speaks Out

“As volunteer officers, we deploy alongside regular officers and face the same dangers, hostility, and violence. It’s great to finally see the law catch up with reality,” said Edwards.

“Carrying a Taser is a personal choice, not mandatory. It’s simply another tool to help keep us and the community safe.”

“Our best weapon is always talking and working with people, which usually works. But when force is needed, it’s reassuring volunteers can now use Tasers too.”

Chief Constable Backs Volunteer Tasers

South Wales Police Chief Constable Jeremy Vaughan praised the Special Constabulary’s dedication. “Our volunteers give up their time, some over 1,000 hours a year, showing the same courage and professionalism as regular officers.”

“We currently have 114 Specials, all eligible to train for Taser if they meet criteria. Discharging a Taser is rare – its presence alone often calms situations.”

“I’ve always pushed for officers’ safety at work. Tasers are vital tools that protect both officers and the public.”
