High-Speed Van Chase Ends in Crash After Stolen Vehicle Spotted on A1
Police swooped early Tuesday after spotting a van with cloned plates heading northbound on the A1. The chase kicked off around 3.50am as the suspect vehicle entered Balderton and joined the A46, with officers flashing blue lights to pull it over.
Driver Flouts Orders, Speeds Into Dangerous Pursuit
The driver ignored commands to stop and floored the accelerator in a stolen van taken from Leeds. The pursuit sped through Kelham, near Newark, with the van weaving on the wrong side of the road, risking head-on collisions.
Officers kept a safe distance during the high-risk chase, clocking the vehicle doing over 80mph in a 50mph zone. The van even switched its lights off mid-pursuit before finally crashing into a ditch on Broadgate Lane, Kelham.
Two Arrested, Stolen Car Seats Worth £2,500 Found
Police detained two suspects at the scene. Inside the stolen van, officers discovered several boxes of car seats believed to be stolen, valued at more than £2,500.
A 31-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, motor vehicle theft, failing to stop, and driving while disqualified. Meanwhile, a 30-year-old was also held for vehicle theft and stealing from motor vehicles.
Police Praise Officers’ Skill, Appeal for Witnesses
“The driver’s reckless actions put everyone at risk,” said PC Mike Drury of Nottinghamshire Police. “Thanks to the officers’ skilled and cautious pursuit, no one suffered serious injury. We also recovered a stolen vehicle and numerous stolen car seats.”
