Scammers Exploit Grenfell Tragedy to Rip Off Homeowners
Fraudsters Pretend to Be Council Fire Safety Officials
Fake council and fire safety agents are targeting homeowners, trying to flog unnecessary or non-existent fire safety services. These dodgy dealers are using the recent Grenfell Tower disaster to scare people into paying for “free” or subsidised safety inspections that don’t exist.
Cold Calls and Visits Raise Alarm
Scammers have been cold-calling or showing up unannounced, often citing Grenfell as their reason for contact. Action Fraud UK warns everyone to stay sharp and question any supposed council or fire safety official referencing the tragedy.
Fake Grenfell Charity Website Shut Down
Action Fraud UK recently shut down a bogus website claiming to raise funds for Grenfell victims. They caution that fraudsters may also be contacting companies, pretending to offer contracts to protect homes or buildings from a similar disaster.
“Although no losses have been reported yet, we urge the public to report any suspicious or unsolicited offers linked to health and fire safety – especially those mentioning Grenfell,” said Action Fraud UK.
Stay Alert! Don’t fall for scammers cashing in on tragedy. If you get a suspicious call or visit, report it immediately to Action Fraud UK.
