Kent’s Secret Firefighters: The Elite Technical Rescue Unit
Hidden within Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) is an elite squad few know about – the Technical Rescue Unit. Ready to roll out at a moment’s notice, these specialists tackle the toughest rescues, whether local or global emergencies.
What Makes the Technical Rescue Unit Stand Out?
This crack team is made up of highly trained firefighters equipped to handle major incidents like collapsed buildings, high-altitude rescues, and heavy transport crashes. They bring extra muscle and expertise beyond the standard fire crew.
Armed with heavy-duty machinery, drones, and even search dogs, the unit clears debris after large fires or crashes and demolishes unsafe properties. Their tech and tenacity save lives and secure disaster scenes.
Heroes Behind the Scenes
The main part of our role is to provide technical rescue support for the people of Kent and Medway,” explained Jim, a Watch Manager for KFRS’ Technical Rescue Team. “A fire engine can only carry so much kit, so we bring in the extra equipment needed.”
Jim added, “By far the most rewarding part is helping people. No matter their crisis or disaster, it’s our job to get them home safe.”
Teamwork on Every Front
The team doesn’t work alone. They partner up with police, ambulance services, coastguards, and even international disaster relief squads. Stacey, a Technical Rescue Technician, says:
“When deployed, we work closely with all involved. Whether our crews or partners, we share a common goal – to help those in need. When we succeed, it makes it all worthwhile.”
Training Fit for National and Worldwide Crises
Every team member has completed National Resilience Urban Search and Rescue training – a government-funded scheme for tackling major UK emergencies like mass flooding.
Stacey and Jim also serve in UK International Search and Rescue (UK-ISAR), deployed to global disaster zones like the 2021 Haiti earthquakes.
Alongside the Technical Rescue Unit, KFRS fields specialist rope rescue teams, water safety units, and an animal rescue group – all ready to support Kent’s communities with expert care and courage.
