Woman Sexually Assaulted on Overnight Avanti West Coast Train

British Transport Police (BTP) have launched a desperate hunt after a woman was sexually assaulted while asleep on a long-distance train from Edinburgh to Wolverhampton. The shocking attack happened in the early hours of Thursday, 23 October 2025.

The victim woke at around 9am to find a man attacking her. The suspect fled immediately when the train pulled into Wolverhampton station, leaving the terrified woman to report the crime.

CCTV Image Released — Police Urge Public to Identify Suspect

Detectives have released CCTV footage showing a man they believe could be the attacker or hold vital clues. A BTP spokesperson said:

“At around 9am on Thursday 23 October, a woman travelling on the service woke to a man sexually assaulting her. He got off the train at Wolverhampton station. We believe the man in the CCTV image may help our investigation.”

The police appeal came nearly three weeks after the attack. Officers are urging anyone who recognises the man to come forward immediately. Contact BTP by texting 61016 or calling 0800 40 50 40, quoting reference 221 of 23 October 2025. You can also report anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Safety Alarms Sound on Britain’s Long-Distance Trains

This harrowing case has reignited fears over lone travel safety on Britain’s rail network, especially for women. The Edinburgh-Wolverhampton route is long, often involving early mornings or late nights — prime times for passengers to sleep and become vulnerable.

  • The victim was travelling alone when the attacker took advantage of her sleeping state.
  • BTP are reviewing extensive CCTV from both the train and Wolverhampton station.
  • Sexual offences on trains rose a staggering 37% between 2014 and 2024, according to BTP statistics.

No arrests have been made as of yet. Police remain tight-lipped about specific descriptions to avoid compromising the investigation, but the suspect appears casually dressed in the images.

Public Plea: Help Nab the Train Attacker

The police appeal has gone viral on social media, drawing thousands of views within hours. Yet, despite tips, no major breakthrough has come forward. Detectives continue combing footage and chasing leads.

Wolverhampton’s role as a West Midlands transport hub could be key — the suspect may have local ties or knowledge.

“Any information, no matter how small, could be crucial,”

“We are determined to find the person responsible and bring them to justice.”

This horrific attack is a stark warning about the dangers women face when travelling alone, especially while sleeping on long train journeys. Campaigners are demanding rail companies step up security with more staff and better CCTV to protect passengers and deter predators.

As the pressure mounts, Britain’s transport authorities and police must act fast to boost safety — without scaring off the millions who rely on trains every day.
