Police Officer Jailed for Leaking Secrets to Criminal Lovers

A corrupt Greater Manchester Police officer has been locked up for nearly four years after spilling sensitive police intel to two criminal lovers. Choni Kenny, 27, admitted betraying public trust by passing confidential info to Josh Whelan, 31, and Rahim Mottley, 28 — both of whom she had romantic ties with.

Romantic Scandal Sparks Police Intel Leak

Kenny joined GMP in 2020 but soon began leaking secret intelligence to Whelan, a known hardened criminal, and Mottley, a former schoolmate. The court heard she tangled in “casual” sexual relationships with both men, including during Whelan’s stint behind bars. Prosecutors revealed Kenny used her police access to swipe victim statements, raid plans, and prisoner data — tipping off the criminals on police operations.

On the day Whelan was freed in November 2022, Kenny visited him and later snooped on police systems to warn Mottley about a firearms raid. She even promised to expose police informants despite recently attending training on protecting them.

Judge Slams ‘Naïve’ Officer for Serious Betrayal

Passing sentence at Liverpool Crown Court, Judge Neil Flewitt KC said:

“You must have known what you were doing was wrong. You let down Greater Manchester Police, the community, your family, and yourself.”

The judge ruled Kenny’s actions weren’t for cash but driven by “naivety and immaturity” while trying to please men who “exploited” her.

Criminal Partners Also Sentenced

Whelan, found with 20 mobile phones in prison — allegedly paid for by Kenny — got two years and eight months for assault and prison offences. Mottley, nabbed after fleeing to Spain, was sentenced to two years and four months. Judge Flewitt called Kenny’s role in this an “aggravating factor,” given her knowledge of Whelan’s drug dealing.

GMP Condemns Corruption, Vows Zero Tolerance

A GMP spokesperson declared:

“This case is a clear betrayal of our values. The vast majority of our officers serve with integrity. We have zero tolerance for corruption.”

Kenny now faces internal misconduct hearings and is expected to be sacked.

Public Trust Shaken, Calls for Tighter Controls

This shocking case raises alarm over police data abuse linked to personal relationships. Though under 0.2% of officers face serious corruption charges, incidents like this erode public confidence. GMP must now prove internal safeguards can stop rogue officers from exploiting their role again.
