The Greenwich Wildlife Network (GWN), a cornerstone in the rescue and rehabilitation of injured and abandoned wildlife in South East London, is calling on the community for urgent support. Facing unprecedented demand, the charity has announced plans to expand into a larger facility to ensure no animal is left behind.
A Record-Breaking Year of Rescues
2024 has been a challenging year for GWN. The small SE18 unit that has been their base of operations is now at capacity. With over 2,275 animals rescued this year—nearly double last year’s number—the team has been forced to make the heartbreaking decision to turn animals away for the first time in its history.
“This isn’t just about space—it’s about survival,” said Rae Gellel, a spokesperson for GWN. “We’ve reached a point where we either expand or face collapse. The animals—and our charity—cannot wait any longer.”
The Need for Expansion
The proposed new facility will cost an additional £300–£400 per month in rent, with significant upfront costs for renovations and equipment. The expansion will enable GWN to:
- Build a fox holding pen for after-hours arrivals.
- Create indoor aviaries to help birds transition from care to release.
- Establish a safe space for domestic animals, such as rabbits, during emergencies.
Partnership with Roots4Life
Adding to their efforts, GWN has partnered with Roots4Life, a local charity focused on combating isolation and unhealthy lifestyles. Through this collaboration, GWN will gain access to The Baker Centre, an 8.6-acre site where they can construct aviaries and soft-release facilities, further enhancing their ability to care for wildlife.
Fundraising Goal: £10,000
GWN is seeking to raise £10,000 to cover:
- Deposit and initial rent for the new unit.
- Essential upgrades and equipment.
- Materials for aviaries and enclosures at The Baker Centre.
So far, £1,484 has been raised through community donations, leaving a significant gap to be filled before the charity can secure the new space.
How You Can Help
GWN is calling on the public to get involved:
- Donate: Every pound counts, and donations can be made via PayPal or bank transfer.
- Spread the Word: Sharing their story helps reach a wider audience.
- Volunteer: The expanded space will require additional hands, with volunteer training opportunities on the horizon.
- Lend Expertise: GWN is in urgent need of a volunteer electrician to fit a light switch in the new unit.
A Message from the Community
Support has already started pouring in. “What you do is invaluable across London and beyond,” commented Emily Poyser-Beezley on social media.
Ron Parsons, another supporter, shared the campaign with his network, saying, “This is a critical moment for a charity that does so much for our local wildlife.”
