M11 Shut for 12 Hours as HGV Hay Fire Sparks Major Chaos

Fiery HGV Blaze Closes M11 Overnight

The northbound M11 in Essex has been slammed shut between Junction 8 (Stansted Airport) and Junction 10 (Royston) after an HGV carrying hay bales went up in flames just after 5pm yesterday (Thursday 19th July 2018).

Essex County Fire and Rescue battled the blaze and remain on scene, soaking the area to stop any chance of the fire reigniting.

Massive 25-Mile Diversion in Place

The closure has forced drivers onto a lengthy diversion. Motorists must leave the M11 at J8, head along the A120 to Little Hadham, continue through Stanton, then onto the A10 and finally rejoin the M11 at J10.

Those travelling to Stansted Airport are warned to brace for a 30-mile detour and allow plenty of extra time for their journey.

Road Repairs Keep M11 Closed Into Early Hours

Update at 2:46am: The M11 northbound remains closed for essential resurfacing after the fire damaged approximately 25 metres of the carriageway.

Recovery and clean-up are ongoing, with inspections underway before the motorway can reopen.
