18-Hour Armed Stand-Off Ends With Arrest and Gun Seized in Quiet Cranleigh Village
A tense 18-hour standoff in Cranleigh came to a dramatic end early Thursday after armed police arrested a man and recovered a firearm from a property in Elmbridge Road.
Armed Police and Dog Units Descend on Elmbridge Road
Officers arrived at the scene around midday on Wednesday (May 24), deploying armed units and police dogs to contain the situation. Surrey Police confirmed the incident was not linked to any terrorist activity. To keep residents safe, five neighbouring homes were evacuated during the operation.
Long Negotiations End in Safe Resolution
Officers spent hours negotiating with the man inside the property, maintaining a tense standoff until 5.30am on Thursday (May 25). Chief Superintendent Jerry Westerman thanked the Cranleigh community for their patience and understanding.
“Clearly, this incident has had a significant impact on the local community. We apologise for the disruption caused and are grateful to the people of Cranleigh for their understanding and patience while we resolved this situation.”
Man Detained Under Mental Health Act and Arrested After Threat
The man stepped outside just before dawn, at which point police detained him under the Mental Health Act. He was later arrested after making further threats to an officer.
“A firearm has been recovered from the property,” officials confirmed, bringing the protracted ordeal to an end.
