Hackney Artist’s Generous Prints Stolen, Police Launch Appeal
Hackney’s own street artist Stik created 100,000 prints of his iconic “Holding Hands” artwork to spread kindness during the pandemic. The gift was meant for every household in the borough, celebrating unity following the installation of a “Holding Hands” sculpture in One Square.
The prints were bundled with the council’s 1 Today publication and delivered on 19 September. But while some locals received their artwork, a massive number never made it into the hands of residents.
Missing Prints Spark Police Probe
Hackney Council quickly raised the alarm, and police launched an investigation into the missing prints. On 26 October, with Stik’s backing, officers made a public appeal for the artworks to be safely returned.
Since the appeal, around 4,000 prints have been handed back, adding to the 1,000 recovered before the call-out.
Stik and Police Praise Public’s Response
“‘Holding Hands’ shows two people looking in opposite directions yet holding hands in a symbol of universal unity and solidarity,” Stik said. “The fact that so many prints were returned to the people of Hackney only amplifies its meaning.”
Detective Constable James Readman: “It’s encouraging the public have done the right thing and returned most of the prints. Stik funded this himself to brighten Hackney’s spirits during a tough year. Sadly, some tried to profit by stealing prints, but the response has been great. Stik is already getting the prints to the rightful owners.”
