Olympic Star’s New Swim Pool Hit by Chemical Leak!
A chemical scare rocked the brand-new Swim! pool in Oldbury, West Midlands, partially owned by double Olympic gold medalist Rebecca Adlington. The 34-year-old swimmer helped open the facility just six weeks ago.
Swimmers Hurt as Toxic Cloud Fills Pool
Just before 9 a.m. today, a chemical leak caused a petrol-like cloud to fill the pool area after chemicals were mixed in the plant room. Firefighters and paramedics rushed to the scene. Ten people were evacuated, with one taken to hospital and another treated for breathing difficulties.
Emergency Crews Race to Contain Leak
West Midlands Fire Service sprang into action with two fire engines, a hazardous materials team, and ambulance crews. Incident commander Andrew Shakespeare said the leak was contained inside the building with no public danger. Firefighters in breathing apparatus ventilated the pool while using high-tech air monitors to ensure safety.
“Firefighters have used equipment from our hazardous materials unit to bring the incident to a successful conclusion,” said the service at 3 p.m. “Crews will be leaving the scene shortly.”
The cause of the chemical mix-up is under investigation, but Swim! and Rebecca Adlington’s team promised a full safety review moving forward.
