Dutch Elm Disease Hits Eastbourne: Infected Tree Removed Near Ice Cream Parlour
Tree surgeons chopped down a Dutch Elm Disease-infected tree outside Eastbourne Heritage Centre yesterday afternoon (January 23). The tree stood opposite the popular “Favaloso” food and ice cream parlour.
East Sussex on Alert: Second Tree Under Review
East Sussex County Council, responsible for managing Dutch elm disease in the region, is now inspecting a second tree to prevent further spread.
The Battle Against Dutch Elm Disease
- Since arriving in the UK in 1971, Dutch elm disease has decimated millions of elm trees nationwide.
- In 1973, a control zone was set up in East Sussex and surrounding areas to contain the deadly fungus.
- East Sussex now boasts the world’s only mature English elm population, says the council.
